Yun Qianyue also looked out of the palace hall. A single purple bamboo stood proudly there. Although Rong Jing's voice was light, it felt like a heavy stone had been dropped into her heart, causing ripples to spread. Her slightly moist eyes became even more blurry, but she could still clearly see that one single purple bamboo. Among all sorts of exotic flowers and grass outside the Royal Glory Palace, there wasn't anything as unique and graceful as this single purple bamboo.
She thought to herself, from now on, the Purple Bamboo Grove would truly be planted in her heart!
Just like how she felt about all her aunts and great-aunts, she didn't love the golden bricks, green glazed tiles, carved corridors, and painted rafters of the Royal Glory Palace. She loved only the Purple Bamboo Grove of the Honor王府紫竹林。
Rong Jing couldn't speak and, using Yun Qianyue's chopsticks, swallowed the fish meat. He looked at her with a deep smile.
Yun Qianyue no longer watched her. Seeing that Empress smiled as she observed them, she gently coughed to clear her throat; it seemed impolite for her to act like this in front of an elder. Her face turned red and she changed the subject, "Auntie isn't interested in my matters I can tell Auntie about them now!"
"Hmm, go ahead," Empress took her gaze off the two people and nodded with a smile.
She hadn’t expected Yun Qianyue and Rong Jing to interact like this privately. A young couple sat in front of her; such an ordinary meal seemed to bring life back to the imperial palace, which had been silent for years. Her heart no longer felt as dead and empty as before, but rather full of hope. She saw through them what their aunts and great aunts gazed at daily: a purple bamboo plant that was once spotted with tear stains and covered in wounds, seemingly devoid of vitality due to the passage of time. But today, she seemed to see all sunlight bypassing the palace’s plants and scenery, shining solely on the purple bamboo. The sun speckled upon it; its posture was stunning.
She thought that if this pair could achieve their goals, it would fulfill the wishes of both the imperial palace and the Purple Bamboo Grove for a hundred years.
But how easy could that be
She sighed softly and kept her sigh bottled up inside.
Rong Jing seemed to understand what Empress was thinking. He looked at her with his head raised but didn’t speak.
Yun Qianyue glanced at Rong Jing, ate slowly as she spoke. She started from the day of her amnesia when Night Tianqin wanted to arrest her in the imperial garden and take her to the Ministry of Punishment’s prison. She briefly summarized what happened after her memory loss. Of course, she omitted many details! For instance, Nan Lingrui's fan, that she was carrying thoughts from a different world inside her body, or the Red Pavilion left by her mother. However, she focused on detailing events since Night Tianyi returned to the capital two days ago—especially what happened in the Imperial Medical Institute this morning and what they heard in the old emperor’s study.
Her voice was extremely low, audible only to the three people present. Empress did not interrupt her; she listened quietly as Rong Jing remained silent throughout. When Yun Qianyue finished recounting everything, the meal came to an end.
Yun Qianyue put down her chopsticks and looked at Empress. She concluded, "Auntie, that’s how it is! Night Tianyi will instruct me tomorrow."
Empress nodded with a serious expression; she remained silent for some time.
Yun Qianyue glanced at Rong Jing. He poured her a cup of tea and handed it to her, saying in a warm tone, "It will soothe your throat!"
Yun Qianyue accepted the tea with an outstretched hand and took a sip. Empress finally spoke up, “I said you couldn’t be truly illiterate if you were raised by a woman like your mother. Though I guessed that you had been pretending all these years, I never imagined how many significant things you accomplished in private! Opening mountains for water to relieve the drought of Northern Frontier five years ago and devising strategies to eliminate its chaos—terraced fields, irrigation, transforming vast tracts of barren land into fertile soil… Not to mention helping Prince Qi evade assassins sent by Crown Prince. Just those two accomplishments alone would earn you no mercy from Emperor if he knew about them!”
"He doesn’t know now, but that won’t save me," Yun Qianyue retorted dismissively.
“That’s different,” Empress shook her head and lowered her voice. “If you are merely a mischievous lady with some talent, Emperor would consider you no more than a clown to amuse him. He might let you out of prison or keep you in the palace. However, if your talents far exceed those of men across the land and every move you make influences Tian Sheng’s political climate, then unless you become Night’s empress by residing in Imperial Palace, there is only one option: death. In this regard, Emperor didn’t mislead Prince Qi.”
Yun Qianyue blinked. “Auntie, are you overreacting The emperor is aging! Moreover, how can he truly harm me”
"You still don't understand the Night Dynasty or its Emperor. A dying centipede doesn’t collapse entirely. Tian Sheng is a vast nation that has stood for a hundred years. Southern Liang and Western Yan and other states have been paying tribute year after year, while the four major royal families in court are deeply entrenched. Over the centuries, countless people tried to overthrow the Night Dynasty but failed to succeed. Empress looked at Yun Qianyue with a solemn tone, “Night’s covert agents’ power covering the world and Emperor's ruthlessness—if one underestimates these, one dies. Moon, I'm not exaggerating. He is more ruthless now that he has aged. Just like autumn mosquitoes, when they're near death, they’re at their most venomous.”
Yun Qianyue nodded; she had to admit Empress was right on this point. The old emperor's strength was almost depleted, so he wanted to take drastic measures to cleanse the court. But he didn't foresee that his favorite and cultivated son would be deeply entangled with her. He probably recalled sending back Night Tianyi to reclaim power and work together to clear out the royal and Yun families. After a major reshuffle, he believed Tian Sheng’s political landscape would become clear and prosperous again, trusting Night Tianyi's capability. However, unexpectedly, for years she had been corresponding with him, which was an unforeseen event. Now that Night Tianyi showed such determination and affection towards her to the point of threatening him, it probably made his heart bleed in regret—wondering why he didn’t kill her earlier.
"Emperor has always intended to eliminate the Royal Family and Yun family long ago. However, there hasn't been a suitable chance for years. The two generations of previous princes were extremely cautious; before Emperor could act, they anticipated his intentions and resolved many crises preemptively. As for the Yun family, my presence and that of our great aunt ensured stability, and now that Moon's father is weak-willed and avoids confrontation, though this makes them appear weaker, it also keeps Emperor from finding any fault with them. They’ve always maintained peace by keeping a low profile and taking precautions at the first sign of trouble."
Empress sighed as she looked at both of them and said solemnly, "Now that you are in love and openly requesting imperial permission to marry, you've placed everything out in the open. This has one advantage: Emperor won't take action against you directly anymore. However, there are downsides too. From now on, if you change the fate of Yun family and Royal Family for a hundred years by uniting them in marriage, their prosperity could continue; otherwise, the consequences will be dire—both families eradicated completely without any remnants left behind, all affiliated branches destroyed, both families collapsing, either death or one living while another dies. The one who lives won't have peace in life and would rather die."
“Can we not just wander off into the wilderness Or retire to live outside of officialdom” Yun Qianyue thought about what Rong Jing had mentioned regarding his Snow Lotus Fragrance buried in Nine-Rings Mountain and Crimson-Blush Drunkenness from Heavenly Snow Mountain. If they were to leave, would it be impossible for them to lead a carefree life with just her and Rong Jing She didn't believe that!
"Yuemo, you're thinking too simply! The world may seem vast, but it's just a matter of the palm of your hand. Where can you hermits truly retreat to Even if all ten hermit families choose to retreat, have they really gone into seclusion Imperial Secret Guards are遍佈天下,每一處都有無數暗樁。
"If you can understand that, it's good!" The Empress shook her head at Yun Qianyue and looked at Rong Jing. His face was calm despite all she had said; she took a deep breath and said, "The Emperor never tolerated you two to begin with, now there’s also the Seventh Prince. Although he protects Yuemo, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Have you thought about what would happen if the Emperor and the Seventh Prince team up against you Could you really resist them"
Yun Qianyue was startled; she hadn't considered that the old emperor and Ye Tianyi might join forces.
Rong Jing’s expression remained unchanged as he met the Empress’ gaze. He said calmly, "I am willing to sacrifice everything for her and overturn the world."
The Empress was moved by his words.
Yun Qianyue's lips curled into a smile; she knew Rong Jing had lost his mind but strangely enough, she wanted to go mad with him. She once told the Empress that if there came a day when she cared about someone more than herself, overturning the world would be worth it. Now, Rong Jing was very important to her; he outweighed all of humanity including herself. Therefore, what reason did she have not to go crazy alongside him She glanced at Rong Jing and said with a smile, "Let's give up our lives for each other!"
What’s the point in winning or losing if they didn’t even try to fight back If they lost, it would merely be one solitary grave covered by a handful of earth; but if they won, it would mean spending their whole life together. They couldn't just give up without fighting. That was neither Rong Jing's nor her character.
"No, the husband leads and wife follows!" Rong Jing corrected Yun Qianyue.
Yun Qianyue rolled her eyes, "How is it not the wife leading"
"It doesn't matter," Rong Jing’s clear eyebrows curled into a deep smile once again.
Yun Qianyue looked up at the ceiling and thought sadly that they hadn’t even become betrothed yet. How did she end up in the category of women
Rong Jing chuckled softly when he saw Yun Qianyue’s slightly glum expression.
The heavy atmosphere inside the palace hall vanished without a trace because of their conversation.
"Since you both are determined, I won't stop you. Even if I wanted to, it seems like there's no way to." The Empress also laughed and said to them, "I originally didn’t agree with your relationship, but seeing that your hearts are set on each other until death, there is nothing else I can do. Furthermore, the situation has developed this far; even if I disagree, the Emperor wouldn’t let you two off."
Yun Qianyue looked at the Empress after she shifted her gaze from the ceiling. If she truly could retract her feelings for Rong Jing, there was no need for the Empress to remind her. She wasn't scared of the old emperor not letting her go; he couldn’t just manipulate her like a soft persimmon. What were Imperial Secret Guards She had Red Pavilion and it was by no means weak; moreover, she also had Rong Jing’s strength.
"Prince Jingshi, from today onwards, I will entrust Yuemo to you! I don’t have any children, so I’ve always treated her like my own daughter. Over the years, as I watched her grow up, I was worried about her future all along. Originally thinking that both of you would no longer be entangled after suffering major calamities and falling ill for a decade, it turned out to still be predetermined." The Empress looked at Rong Jing with a serious expression, "Since you like her and want to marry her, dedicating your life to her alone, then you must fulfill this promise. Love her and protect her; sacrifice everything."
"Auntie, rest assured that I never speak without conviction," Rong Jing nodded seriously.
"Mm-hmm, I trust your character." The Empress nodded again, "You came to me for the right reason today. Knowing your situation allows me to offer assistance from the side; even if it’s no help, I will make sure that the Emperor doesn’t use me against you."
"Prince Jingshi intended this; please don't hold my rudeness against me!" Rong Jing stood up and bowed to the Empress.
The Empress laughed gently, "You don’t need to be so polite. Since both of you call me auntie, we are family. I look forward to your wedding day as a way to comfort the spirits of my long-deceased sisters in honor palace. It will also bring peace to my heart."
Rong Jing sat up, smiling slightly. "That day won't keep Auntie waiting for too long!"
The Empress smiled and nodded.
Yun Qianyue thought about her aunt's attitude shifting from strong opposition to anger and rejection, then finally to a friendly demeanor today. She finally acknowledged Rong Jing! She glanced at Rong Jing, thinking that his purpose for the day had been achieved. He truly didn't do anything without benefit.
"Moon, you said earlier that Master Pu Shan from Fragrant Spring Mountain Lingtai Temple can help you recover your memory and break the Phoenix Curse set by your mother" The Empress looked at Yun Qianyue and asked again.
"Yes, it's supposed to be possible!" Yun Qianyue nodded.
"Your mother must have had her reasons for setting the Phoenix Curse on you when she did. Auntie agrees with your idea. It’s not a big deal if you lost your memory, as long as you are still you. However, how deeply involved is the Seventh Prince with you now Only you know that best. Moreover, he used the Northern Frontier之事威脅你,那些事情如今的確不能公之於眾。
"I’ve already sent a message to Master Pu Shan. Let’s go!" Night Tianyi smiled as Yun Qianyue approached him, his eyes warm and penetrating. "Do you want to ride or take a carriage"
"Let's ride," Yun Qianyue replied warmly but didn't let it affect her composure. Sitting in the same carriage would be too awkward.
"Alright!" Night Tianyi responded, turning and leading the way out of the palace.
Yun Qianyue glanced at the purple bamboo plant located in the southern corner, then followed him out of the palace.
The sound of their footsteps grew distant. Rong Jing suddenly picked up a chopstick from the table and threw it towards the roof. The Empress was startled; she heard a familiar scream, followed by a figure falling off the roof. Just as the Empress was about to shout, she remembered that Rong Jing was still there, so she suppressed her urge.
"Prince Ying, you've had quite an achievement today!" Rong Jing said softly while looking at the person lying motionless on the ground.
The Empress was taken aback by this. She looked at the person who seemed to have been immobilized and recognized him as Nan Lingrui based on his clothing and fan despite being unable to move due to having their acupoints sealed. Her face darkened, "Why is Prince Ying here in my place"
"Rong Shizi, you first unseal my acupoints. Your hands aren't light enough; do you want to cripple me" Nan Lingrui said with a strange tone, obviously enduring the pain from being immobilized and unable to move as he replied, "The Emperor agreed that I can live in Royal Prosperity Palace too, so naturally, I have come here to report."
"Impossible! Prince Ying must be joking! How could you possibly live here" The Empress stood up abruptly.
"How could this prince lie His Imperial Majesty truly agreed. Earlier today when I said it, I was right at the palace gate; has Your Royal Highness forgotten about it" Nan Lingrui shouted with clenched teeth, "Rong Shizi, quickly unseal my acupoints."
The Empress recalled that earlier Lady Cold had her face ruined by Yun Qianyue and Prince Ying followed the Emperor here. She stopped herself from speaking out further and looked at Rong Jing.
Rong Jing sat still, looking at Nan Lingrui slowly saying, "Prince Ying, eavesdropping is not a good habit!"
"I learned it from Rong Shizi! Isn't he the one who likes to listen in" Prince Ying said.
"Your words are incorrect. What Rong enjoys most is sealing people's acupoints and not wanting to unseal them." Rong Jing raised his eyebrows coolly, "Especially given how much you shouldn’t have heard today. Isn’t it necessary for you to disclose something Is it better that I take your life or poison you mute and deafened before throwing away your limbs in the mass grave where you are left to fend for yourself Which do you prefer"
The Empress was alarmed, thinking about what Prince Ying of Nan Liang had just heard. What consequences would there be if he were killed She watched Rong Jing without speaking; today’s matter indeed involved a secret that could have serious implications. If Prince Ying spoke out or acted against their interests, the results would be unimaginable.
"Rong Shizi, you can’t do this; I’ve helped that little girl several times. Even if you don't look at my face, wouldn’t you consider her feelings If you kill me, she’ll be heartbroken." Prince Ying said with an odd but restrained tone without a hint of fear, "That place is full of vicious dogs, which I detest. Would Rong Shizi actually have the heart to harm this prince"
"Prince Ying can try!" Rong Jing calmly looked at him. "Whether she will be heartbroken or not, I don’t know, but I know that Prince Ying has no room for negotiation now. It would be easy for me to kill you. We’ll talk about other things later."
"You’re ruthless, Rong Jing!" Prince Ying clenched his teeth.
"Since Prince Ying knows how ruthless I am, then tell me the truth," Rong Jing said calmly.
"What do you want to know I’ll only disclose one thing. Think it over before asking. Don’t expect any more information even if I’m killed and thrown in a mass grave for dogs." Prince Ying ground his teeth in submission finally.
"The fan that Prince Ying has…" Rong Jing said slowly.
"You want it Impossible! Anything but this matter can be discussed," Prince Ying immediately cut him off.
I don’t want it, "Rong Jing shook his head, looking at the fan in Nan Lingrui’s hand. His eyes were deep and dark like a pool, "I just want to know where that fan came from."
"Of course you would ask about this; unseal my acupoints first!" Prince Ying snorted.
Rong Jing picked up another chopstick and threw it at Nan Lingrui. The chopstick hit him in the back with a "crack" sound, and he moaned as he stood up from the ground, his face pale. He turned around to look at Rong Jing, "This prince thought my concealment was pretty good; how did you discover that"
"This is thanks to Aunt!" Rong Jing glanced at the Empress.
The Empress looked at Rong Jing in puzzlement.
"Do you remember when we came in, Aunt shouted. Why did Aunt notice us" Rong Jing asked the Empress.
The Empress pointed to the mirror beside the bed, "I wasn't asleep then. I only noticed your shadows and realized that it was you!"
"Prince Ying understands now, huh At that time, what the mirror reflected were not us but you," Rong Jing looked at the mirror inside the canopy and explained, "Aunt has no martial arts skills; she just knows a little self-defense. Of course, it was impossible for her to notice our presence or your arrival. We could only be seen thanks to that mirror. The angle of the mirror pointed towards the ceiling beam and three zhang away from the bed. When we came in, we did not approach within three zhang of the bed. You arrived before us and climbed onto the ceiling beam. That’s why you were captured by the reflection."
"So that's how it is! Such a useful mirror!" Nan Ling Rui was enlightened, raising his eyebrows at Rong Jing, "Then did you also discover me through the mirror"
Rong Jing shook his head, "Prince Ying’s concealment technique is superb. But it can't hide from my eyes!"
Nan Ling Rui snorted and looked at Rong Jing, "If you had known about me earlier, why did you only tell me now You are deliberately giving me the chance to eavesdrop."
"I was thinking Prince Ying hadn't eaten lunch. How do you feel watching others eating" Rong Jing raised his eyebrows as he looked at Nan Ling Rui.
Nan Ling Rui’s face darkened, walked over and sat down heavily. He said to the Empress, "This prince does not eat leftovers. I want another full course prepared."
The Empress frowned at Nan Ling Rui, her expression stern as she reminded him, "Prince Ying, this is my sleeping quarters. Your presence here isn’t proper. If it spreads out, it will be bad for both your and my reputation."
"Then why can he stay" Nan Ling Rui pointed to Rong Jing.
"Shi Zi Rong is different from Prince Ying!" The Empress looked at Rong Jing.
"How are they different Is it because he’s Rong Jing or because he’s your niece’s favored person" Nan Ling Rui raised his eyebrows, glancing at Rong Jing. He threw the fan in his hand to him with a "taptap" sound, "You always call her Aunt. Shi Zi Rong calls smoothly! If you want to know how this fan came about, look for yourself!"
Rong Jing reached out and took the fan, slowly opening it, and when he saw the writing on the inside where one grips the handle, his expression changed.
"Empress, I am hungry! If you don’t order, this prince will shout outside!" Nan Ling Rui no longer looked at Rong Jing but turned to the Empress. Seeing her not react, he shouted outside, "Here…"
"Prince Ying!" The palace was filled with a thin anger as she spoke.
"Auntie, order someone else to prepare another full course," Rong Jing lifted his head and saw the Empress looking at Nan Ling Rui unhappily. He handed her the fan in his hand and said gently, "Look then you will know!"
The Empress took the fan puzzledly; when she saw the writing on the handle inside, she was stunned and looked back at Nan Ling Rui with disbelief.
Nan Ling Rui suddenly smiled and winked at her, "Empress, you really won’t even give this prince a full course"
